The Art of Juggling: Managing Entrepreneurship and Motherhood
Let me paint you a picture: It’s 7 AM, and I’m already up, juggling 3 different breakfast requests from my little one while mentally running through my to-do list for the day. Emails to send, client meetings to prepare for, and somewhere in there, squeezing in some self-care (ha, right).
If you’re an entrepreneurial mom like me, this scene probably feels all too familiar. The delicate dance of managing a business while raising a family is both an art and a science, filled with its unique set of challenges and triumphs.
We’ve all been there – caught in the whirlwind of deadlines and school pickups, client calls and bedtime stories. The truth is, balancing these two demanding roles isn’t always easy, but it’s definitely possible. And with the right strategies, you can thrive in both worlds without losing your sanity.
Let me be the first to say this—and please hear me loud and clear—I do not have this figured out or perfected. What I do may not work for you. And honestly? Some days this doesn’t even work for me. But it’s what I have figured out works best for me, my family, and my business. So my hope is that it gives you a tip or two… or at the very least, some encouragement.
Tips for Balancing Both Roles
Time Management Strategies
Time Blocking: Think of time blocking as your secret weapon. Set aside specific chunks of time for work and family activities. For example, dedicate 9 AM to 12 PM to work tasks, followed by lunch and playtime with the kids. By creating a clear schedule, you can focus on one role at a time, minimizing the chaos and maximizing productivity.
Prioritizing Tasks: Let’s be real – you can’t do it all, and that’s okay. (say that again) Start your day by identifying your top three priorities. What absolutely needs to get done today? Focus on these tasks first, and give yourself grace if some things need to roll over to tomorrow.
Using a Planner or Digital Calendar: Whether you’re old-school with a paper planner or digital-savvy with apps like Google Calendar, having a visual representation of your day can be so helpful. Color-code your activities (work tasks in blue, family time in yellow, self-care in pink) to see at-a-glance where your time is going.
Setting Boundaries
Work Hours: Establish clear work hours and communicate them with your family and clients. For instance, you might decide that after 6 PM, the laptop closes, and it’s all about family time. Respecting these boundaries helps you be present in each role without feeling pulled in a million directions.
Dedicated Workspaces: Create a workspace that’s just for you. It could be a corner of the living room or a small home office. When you’re in this space, it’s work time. When you leave, it’s family time. This physical boundary can help your brain switch gears more effectively.
Utilizing Support Systems
Family and Friends: Don’t hesitate to lean on your support network. Maybe it’s asking your partner to handle bedtime routines so you can catch up on emails, or arranging playdates to give you a few hours of uninterrupted work time.
Childcare Solutions: If feasible, consider part-time daycare or a babysitter. This investment can free up significant chunks of time for focused work, allowing you to be more productive and present when you’re with your kids.
Co-working Spaces with Childcare: Some cities offer co-working spaces that include childcare services. This can be a lifesaver, providing a professional environment to work in while your children are nearby and cared for.
Overcoming Guilt and Finding Joy
Addressing the Guilt
Let’s talk about the elephant in the room – mom guilt. It’s real, and it’s relentless. You might feel guilty for working too much or not working enough. Here’s the thing: You’re doing your best, and that’s more than enough. Give yourself permission to let go of the unrealistic expectation that you need to do everything perfectly. (TBH, I have to tell myself this weekly).
Finding Joy in Small Victories
Celebrate the little wins. Did you manage to get through a client call without a toddler tantrum in the background? Victory! Did you squeeze in a 10-minute yoga session while the baby napped? High five! These small moments of triumph add up and remind you that you’re doing a great job juggling it all.
Creating Special Family Rituals
Carve out intentional family time that everyone looks forward to. It could be Friday night movie nights, Sunday morning pancake breakfasts, or evening walks. These rituals create lasting memories and help you stay connected with your family amidst the busyness.
Being a mom and an entrepreneur is no small feat. It’s a delicate balance that requires patience, creativity, and a lot of coffee. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help, set boundaries, and take breaks. You’re building a life you love for both you and your family, and that’s something to be incredibly proud of.
